Today I did declutter and organize session on our under-the-stairs closet. Fortunately, I didn’t find a Harry Potter-type character living under our stairs, but I found all kinds of things that just didn’t belong.
One of the big reasons why I wanted to complete this project was because we didn’t have clear access to our water shut-off valve. Yikes!
My friend recently had to turn off her water because her washing machine started to overflow. Her laundry room is upstairs, so the water from her washing machine ended up leaking down to her first floor, ruining her ceiling, and her hardwood floors. She had to leave her home for several days while professionals came in to clean everything up. Fortunately, she knew where her water valve turn-off thingy was.
Until this happened to her, I didn’t know where ours was. Now I do! It was behind all of my random kitchen tools in our under-the-stairs closet.
I decided to move the shelf in our closet to the other side in order to have better access to the water shut-off thing. Then, I did a massive declutter. There were all kinds of crazy things in this closet: a fake rose, toilet paper and paper towel rolls that I was saving for craft projects (ha!), boxes for video game consoles (yes, that’s plural), huge water bottles, random cookbooks, Happy Meal boxes, an empty Kleenex box, and a candle. Hmmm…
So, things were trashed, moved, and re-located to places that made more sense. Now my random kitchen appliances have a lot more room to hang out and be awesome. We have access to our water valve-thingy. And, I won’t be embarrassed the next time someone decides to look for Harry Potter in our under-the-stairs closet.
Do you know where your water shut off thing is? Have you ever had to use it?
